Advisory: Hardlock Key Troubleshooting Guide for CAM350 9.5 or Later

Problem: CAM350 installation using a hardlock key is starting up in Demo Mode

Step 1: Determine the source of the Problem

Start CAM350 and select FILE | SETUP | LICENSING

In the box labeled “Serial Number” you should see “DST=” followed by your serial number.

  • If a box labeled “Default HOST ID” with a string of numbers and letters appears, go to step 2.
  • If a "DST=" serial number is displayed, go to step 3.

Older Version Notes: If you are not running v 8.5 or later, then the key will only be detected if the proper license is in place. Download the zipped key detection application.  In versions prior to CAM350 8.0 the command sequence was FILE | SETUP | ACCESS CODE rather than FILE | SETUP | LICENSING.

Step 2: Key Detection Problems

Check for the following problems. After each step, check FILE | SETUP | LICENSING to see if the key is being detected. If it is detected but you still get shareware, go to step 3.

1. Is the key plugged in?

It is best for parallel keys if they are only installed or removed while the system is off. USB keys should go thru standard windows disconnection procedure for USB devices.

Note for Terminal Systems: For single station licenses, the key will not be detected by terminal thus licensing will fail.  The key must be plugged into the system you are using. A network license is required for terminals.

2. Is it a USB key?

CAM350 V 8.0 or later must be installed or there is no driver to run the key.

3. Is it a Glenco Key (black parallel port key)?

These keys only work in Windows 95, 98 and ME. Contact Downstream to arrange a replacement.  Additionally, it is not known if these keys will work with CAM350 8.0 or later.

4. Please remove all other parallel port devices if you have a parallel port CAM350 key.

Once the key has been successfully detected by doing one of these steps, try plugging the other devices back in. It is preferred to have the CAM350 key plugged in first.

5. Driver Installation

It is recommended that you remove USB keys from USB port before running. Parallel Port keys can remain plugged in during installation.  CAM350 installation also installs the key driver.  But this may fail. Run "Sentinel Protection Installer 7.3.2.exe".  You'll find this program in your hardlock directory:

c:\program files\DownStream Technologies\cam350 9.5\hardlock\

If you encounter a permissions problem, log off the system and log on as an administrator and try it again. If the program offers the option to repair/remove/modify then the driver is installed. Try removing it and then run “Sentinel Protection Installer 7.3.2.exe” again to install. Always do a complete install. If it is not currently installed it will give you the option to install the driver. If you are offered the option to upgrade, this means an older version of the driver is installed. Accept the upgrade offer.

After Installing or upgrading the driver, reboot. You can plug your USB key back in at any time after the installation.

Older Version Notes: In the past the driver has been named SSD5411-32BIT.exe and SetupX86.exe.

6. Parallel Port Mode

Parallel Port keys only. USB key users skip this step. In Windows 2000 and later, open Control Panels then select System | Hardware | Device Manager. Click the “+” next to PORTS (Com & LPT). If an ECP Printer Port is listed then this could be a problem. The Rainbow Sentinel key (white parallel port key) does not work well with ECP mode. Access to the system’s BIOS settings is required to change this. BIOS settings are also known as Computer Setup and CMOS Settings. Enter the system BIOS by pressing the correct key during startup (this key varies). Find Onboard Parallel Port Mode setting and make sure it is not set to ECP. Preferred settings are Bi-directional, SPP or Normal (AT for Dell systems). If you need help with this contact tech support.

7. Remember, if you have reinstalled the key driver, you need to reboot before it can work.

8. If you disconnected a USB key during driver installation, make sure you plug it back in after the driver is finished installing.

9. Has the key been out of use for a long period of time?

The key has a capacitor in it that is charged by being plugged into a computer. If it has not been plugged into a system for a long period of time (such as a year, but sometimes as short as 6 months) then it is possible that the charge has faded. This erases the keys memory. If this is occurred then the key needs to be replaced. If you suspect this kind of problem, go to step 4.

USB keys will have a longer lifespan in theory. To date we have not encountered any USB key that has been erased by disuse.

Step 3: Licensing Problems

If the is Key detected, but CAM350 does not work, then the problem is with licensing. Note that edits to anything on the FEATURE lines in the license file will cause the license to fail.

1. Make sure the key is detected properly

Select FILE | SETUP | LICENSING, Check displayed serial number.
010-73X-XXXX is the serial number of a parallel port key
010-74X-XXXX is the serial number of a USB key.
If the displayed serial number is anything else, go to Step 4.

2. License file must be in CAM350 folder.

Make sure the license is in the correct folder. The license.dat file must be in the same folder as camnt95.exe. In 9.5 the correct default location is:

c:\program files\DownStream Technologies\cam350 9.5\license.dat.

3. Make sure the license file is named license.dat

The license file must be named license.dat, or CAM350 will ignore it. Make sure Windows is set to show full file extensions. To check this you can look at the files in the folder and see if they have file extensions (camnt95.exe rather than just camnt95). You can change this in most versions of windows by selecting TOOLS | FOLDER OPTIONS | VIEW and uncheck “Hide file extensions for known types”.

4. Make sure the license file is for the version of software you are trying to run.

License files have a maintenance expire date that appears on each Feature line. The software’s program date (release date) must be prior to the date in the Feature line. You can find your program date by selecting INFO | SATUS inside CAM350. Your maintenance expire date is the first date on the feature line. It is listed as a year and month only. 2007.04 would be April 2007.

5. Make sure the license file has not expired.

Hardlock key licenses should be permanent. Again, you can check this by opening your license.dat file in a text editor (like Notepad) and reading the first FEATURE line. The Date in the line should be 1-jan-0000. Any other date will cause the license to expire on that date. Keep the text editor open for the next few checks as well.

6. Make sure this is a Hardlock license.

In the license file, make sure the first line is a FEATURE line. If it is not, please send a copy of the license file to support@downstreamtech.com

7. Make sure this is not a Demo license.

On the first FEATURE line, if you see FEATURE CAM350-SHAREWARE, then you have a Shareware Demo license. Check your software package for a 3.5 diskette with your license, or look for an email from DownStream with your license attached. Copy the license to the CAM350 folder (see Step 3 part 2 above).

8. Make sure the serial number matches what is on the key.

Somewhere in each FEATURE argument there will appear the string “DST=” it should equal the Serial number that appears in your CAM350 licensing windows (without dashes). If it does not, go to Step 4 (below).

Older Version Notes:  Keyed versions prior to v 8.0 used an access code rather than a license file. Thus most of the info in this section is not relevant. If you have lost your access code or the one you have is not working for a key that is being detected, please contact support@downstreamtech.com. Please include the serial number and the version of CAM350 you are using. On versions 8.0 thru 8.7.1, a version number appeared on the Feature line right before the date. 8.0 version file will work with CAM350 v 8.0 thru 8.6.2. 8.7 version file will work with 8.7 thru 8.7.1.

Step 4: Serial Number Problems

Check the serial number that appears in the CAM350 licensing window (FILE | SETUP | LICENSING). The serial number should be in the following format 010-7XX-XXXX

1. Is the displayed serial number all zeros?

If this is the case, the key has been erased or damaged.

2. More that one leading zero?

This may be a port problem as described in step 2 part 6. Also make sure no other devices are chained with the key.

3. Is the Serial Number is different than expected?

From Step 3 part 7. Serial number from the file is different from the serial number displayed. But it is still a valid serial number (Step 3 part 1) then you have the wrong license file. Please contact support@downstreamtech.com. Send the license file you have and the displayed serial number.

4. Are unreadable characters appearing in the window?

If unreadable characters appear (characters that are not numbers or letters), then you have encountered a bug with the 9.5 installation. Solution is the 9.5.1 (or later) release. This is available here - http://www.downstreamtech.com/Support_CAM/Download_options.html.
