Installation Tips

Most of our existing DownStream documentation for installation is directed towards first time installs. These technical notes address some common questions and issues faced by users doing re-installation - new license files or new releases.

There are 2 basic types of licenses, Nodelocked and Floating.  Floating licenses are distributed by a server over a network.  All BluePrint licenses are Floating.

Floating License Upgrade

These are a bit complex. Most of the work for this kind of upgrade has to be done on the license server before clients can access the new software.

If you plan to run the DownStream Technologies product on the server as well as vend licenses from it, both steps of the installation are needed.

Normal installation on Server

Installing on the license server is the first step. But only run Step 1 of the install. This installs the license manager software (if it needs updating) and your new license file. This will only affect the FlexLM software installed by your previous installation. It will not affect any other vendor’s software or license services.

Manual installation options for Server

If you prefer not to install new software on the license server, there are other options. You can send a request to support@downstreamtech.com for your new license file and any new daemons being used. Please include a copy of your old license file when you do this. If your license server is UNIX, please choose either Solaris or HP UNIX daemons. Instructions for manual update will be included with the license file and daemons.

Client side of the update

Clients only need run step 2 of the install (install CAM350 and/or BluePrint). There is no need to install licensing software on a client. But it does not cause any problems if you do install it. When installing, it’s a good idea to browse to a copy of the license.dat file from the license server. How you browse to it is not important. You can do it though a network connection, or off your local drive or even off a portable memory device.
